It's that time of year....ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS (AUS)
After the McGill Team Challenge in Montreal earlier in January, this is the most important meet of the season for most athletes. The UNB Varsity Reds Track & Field team consists of 52 athletes on its roster, the LARGEST team on campus! An exceptional 34 of them have been selected to participate in this weekends AUS Championship.
In the past 4 years, the UNB Track & Field team went from being a small group of individuals to one of the largest teams looking to win the championship. With St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University fielding strong and large teams, the competition is going to be FIERCE, especially with the men's team. "The interesting thing with the men is that for every event we are looking good to win some medals" says Head Coach Jason Reindl.
Here are a few guys that the crowd should keep a close eye out as SERIOUS MEDAL THREATS:
Alexander Williston 60m, 4x200m
Daniel Brown 300m, 600m, 4x200m, 4x400m
Jonathon Bunn 600m, 1000m, 4x400m, 4x800m
Brendon Cleghorn LJ, HJ, 4x200m
Kyle Ancheta TJ, LJ
Jordan Johnson HJ, LJ
Kyle Lefort Pent, 60mH, 4x200m
James Murphy 1000m, 1500m, 4x800m
As for our female athletes, the women's team is looking for a TOP 3 team placing at this year's championship. According to Jason Reindl: "The women's team is very strong, but due to a few injuries and small numbers we are just looking to score and many points and win as many medals as possible"
Some pretty faces to watch try for the podium:
Nathalie Cecire 600m, 1000m, 4x400m, 4x800m
Tess McDonald TJ, LJ, 4x200m
Katie Robinson 600m, 1000m, 4x400m, 4x800m
Zoe Berry SP, WT
Good luck to all the athletes competing this weekend in Moncton at the AUS Championships!
Just KEEP CALM and TURN LEFT !
GO! REDS GO!
